Braces - How Do I Get Started?

Braces can increase your comfort and give you a glowing smile—find out what you need to know.

Since their invention in the early 1800s, braces have been a powerful tool in dentistry and orthodontics. These simple devices, which now come in many different forms, can help you to redefine your smile one day at a time.

Many people love what braces can do for their teeth, but the timeline can be uncertain. In this article, we are going to explore what you can expect when getting approved for braces and moving forward with the process.

Getting Braces: What You Need to Know

Getting braces and perfecting smiles is a process that is very common in the modern world. More people are exploring braces at different ages and walking away with beautifully straight teeth. Here’s what you need to know about the process.

Can Anyone Get Braces?

If you are curious about braces, you might be wondering whether or not you qualify for them. In general, most people can get braces if they need them. The only real concern is making sure that your mouth can support these changes, which means that it is essential to have all of your adult teeth and a healthy mouth to move forward.

How Do I Get Started?

When you decide to get braces, the first step is to schedule an appointment with Dr. Bloom. At the appointment, he will check out your teeth and jaw to ensure that you are a good candidate and to gather the information that is needed to design your treatment plan.

During your consultation appointment, Dr. Bloom will review your x-rays and exam results and discuss them with you in detail. Part of that discussion will include whether or not you need braces, various options for treatment, the cost of braces, and what insurance is expected to cover. Insurance coverage can sometimes be confusing, but at Bloom Orthodontics we have a dedicated insurance coordinator that will make sure you fully understand your insurance’s orthodontic benefit before starting treatment.

What is the Waiting Period for Braces?

During your consultation appointment, Dr. Bloom will let you know if you are ready to start treatment. If so, the braces can be placed according to your schedule. Sometimes, they can even be placed on the same day as the consultation! However, in some cases, Dr. Bloom may need to speak with your general dentist to ensure all your dental work has been completed before starting orthodontic treatment. If treatment needs to be delayed for any reason, he will inform you during the consultation appointment that there may be a brief waiting period.

How Long Do Braces Take to Work?

Duration is a big concern for most people who get braces. Understandably, no one wants braces for longer than they need to have them. For some, braces can be fully effective in six months or so, but other people might end up needing braces for up to two years or more. Every set of teeth is different.

The Takeaway

Braces can have life-changing effects and make your teeth look great, so it is always best to get them sooner rather than later if you can—but there is never a bad time to get started.
